This past Friday night, thousands of residents of the Sioux Empire and surrounding areas showed how much they love a parade, as approximately 54,300 people turned out for the 30th annual Downtown Sioux Falls “Parade of Lights” on Phillips Avenue from 13th Street to 5th Street. .
You knew the crowd was going to be huge because the weather here in Sioux Falls on Black Friday was almost tropical for this time of year.
A good friend of mine was in the city of Rochester, Minnesota and he and his wife went to the parade and they loved it. They said it lasted almost two hours and it was FULL of people everywhere!

Dakota News Now reports that there were more than 60 parade participants this year. Some floats were new, some were old favorites from the past making another appearance.
Like every year, downtown Sioux Falls held its annual After-Party Parade of Lights and Awards Ceremony at the Holiday Inn City Center after the festivities wrapped up on Friday night. During the ceremony, they announced the winners of the Parade of Lights for 2022.
According to Dakota News Now, there were a total of six different awards given out that night, in various categories ranging from Best Use of Lights to the Hometown Pride Award.
- The Lebahn family train in the Better use of lights category
- South Dakota Urban Indian Health for best workmanship
- catfish bay for Sioux Falls Spirit
- Pinnacle Productions picked up the Mayor’s Election Award
- The El Riad Sanctuary won the Downtown Sioux Falls Award
- And Dakota Alliance received the First Bank & Trust Hometown Pride Award

If you missed the parade like I did, and still need to scratch that Christmas lights itch, you can do it every night during Winter Wonderland in Falls Park. That elaborate holiday light display happens every night from 5:00 p.m. to midnight through January 8 at Falls Park at 131 East Falls Park Drive in Sioux Falls.
