If you live in New England and love donuts (What’s not to love about donuts?), you’ll want to keep reading.
Yelp scoured the nation earlier this year in search of America’s best bakers of glazed, iced, dipped, sprinkled and cream-filled confections to create “America’s 100 Best Donut Shops 2022,” and two stores in Connecticut and Massachusetts earned a spot on the sweet list.
Brooklyn Baking in Waterbury, Connecticut, was ranked 51st on the list. The donut shop, located at 464 Reidville Dr., has a 5-star rating on Yelp with hundreds of glowing reviews. Happy patrons describe it as an “absolute gem in a random square,” and it seems the famous glazed donut is an absolute must.
“Stop what you’re doing and just go there. It may be a nondescript store in a strip mall, but it hides a gem of a bakery,” John. R. wrote on Yelp. “This is a family-owned operation, it’s a bakery for solid preserves, breads and other delights. On the weekends, the line is out the door. Don’t worry, they’re heavily staffed and it moves quickly.”
“We enjoyed a dozen donuts…a variety of jelly filled, cream filled, glazed and powdered donuts. All of these donuts were excellent,” he added before making a bold prediction… “Having eaten Brooklyn donuts Bakery, you will never stop at Dunkin or Tim Horton’s again!”
With no Krispy Kreme locations in Massachusetts, one man took drastic measures to satisfy his cravings.
While you may lose interest in chain donuts, you’ll probably want to head to Ayer, Massachusetts, to try a dozen (or two dozen) donuts from Ruby Donut, which Yelp named the 94th best store in the country. The store, which also has a 5-star review on Yelp, is located at 210 W. Main Street and the raspberry apple fritters seem to be a fan favorite.
One happy customer wrote that it has hands down the best donuts in Massachusetts.
“Found this hidden gem near us and couldn’t be happier,” wrote Mike C. “Drive there now, you won’t be disappointed.”
“Best donuts we’ve ever had,” said Linda T., noting that people come from all over to visit Ruby Donut.
“Absolutely the best donuts I’ve ever had!” Lori L. proclaimed.
According to Yelp, there was a surprising trend in donut styles in the top 100. Light, fluffy, leavened donuts and denser cake donuts remain top sellers, but oversized donuts are becoming more popular. So are the many twists on the traditional donut, such as fritters, bear claws, fritters, and cronuts.
