The Matcha Tokyo from Japan is now brewed in Metro Manila

MANILA, Philippines – To all my best matcha teas: Here’s the tea from Japanese brand The Matcha Tokyo’s long-awaited arrival of matcha in Metro Manila!

Either mahilig ka sa damo or just enjoy the earthy yet milky taste of a matcha latte, all members of the matcha gang are welcome here. Matcha Tokyo serves carefully hand-selected 100% organic ceremonial grade matcha in Japan that is as clean and premium as it gets.

And as a non-matcha drinker, I honestly might be on my way to matcha girl status after getting a taste of what The Matcha Tokyo had to offer its Filipino patrons.

So little time, so matcha to learn

The first Matcha Tokyo branch in Metro Manila opened on Friday, November 18, run by Mistukoshi Group, Tasteless Food Group (The Grid, Scout’s Honor, Poison Donuts, Hanamaruken Ramen) and The Matcha Tokyo Japan team.

Located on the ground floor of Bonifacio Global City’s new Mitsukoshi shopping center, the modest open space features an open bar, minimalist and industrial interiors, wooden benches and a display of exclusive products. The open bar allows you to see first-hand the intriguing and intriguing traditional brewing process of matcha tea.

Pro tip: when whisking your bowl of matcha powder with the traditional bamboo persecutor, be sure to quickly beat in an up and down motion rather than from side to side; this makes it the creamiest foam.

The Matcha Tokyo, which was founded in 2018 in Tokyo, prides itself on its “highest quality” matcha. The Japanese brand’s farm uses clean water, fertile and pesticide-free soil, and carefully selected tea leaves. These are harvested by experienced Japanese farmers in a conscious and sustainable way, as they are only harvested once a year.

The delicate tea leaves are then steamed, dried and ground with a stone mill into a fine powder, resulting in the world-famous ancient Japanese superfood known for its strong flavor, bright green color. , health benefits and versatile use in beverages. , Japanese delicacies and desserts.

A matcha made in heaven

My first matcha drink in years was the best-selling and beginner-friendly The Matcha Tokyo. Iced Matcha Latte, made with ice, oat milk, unrefined sugar syrup, and Japan Premium Matcha, the team-recommended type of matcha with a strong umami flavor.

The best thing about The Matcha Tokyo drinking experience is that it differs per person, depending on your personal preferences. You can customize your sweetness level depending on how sweet or sour you want your matcha, and your choice of milk (dairy, soy, almond, or oat (my favorite)) also makes a slight difference in creaminess and flavor.

I loved my Matcha Oatmeal Iced Latte with 50% sugar – it was a smooth, clean, balanced and tasty drink; The herbaceous bitterness of the matcha is toned down, but the earthy flavor still shines through alongside the subtle sweetness and creaminess of oat milk. Especially on the rocks, it made for a refreshing drink that I wouldn’t mind having in place of my afternoon cup of coffee.

Matcha Tokyo branch BGC also caters to a new Philippine exclusive Ube Matcha Latte (Q210), (which will soon be on Japan’s seasonal menu). The Tasteless Group team said the collaboration idea was a “Filipino couple that just made sense,” and it does! The Iced Matcha Latte is topped with a silky, creamy and sweet ube cream that adds the distinctive nuttiness and sweetness of the famous purple yam to the drink, without overpowering it.

There are also matcha treats to accompany the drinks, like the vegan one from chef Sonny Mariano. Black sesame matcha cookie (P175) and plant-based, gluten-free and sugar-free Brain or Beauty Matcha Energy Bars made with chocolate, nuts and/or acai berries.

Menu, prices: all things elaborate

Matcha Tokyo allows you to choose between three types of matcha for your hot or iced drinks. There is the “best mix” recommended premium japan with low bitterness, the “refreshing” Kyoto Uji, and the GOKO, a hand-picked rare leaf with a “super strong umami flavor.” They cost P190, P200 and P250 respectively for hot and iced formats.

Other frozen drinks on the menu are Matcha Espresso Latte (P205), Frozen Matcha Latte (P220), Matcha Chai Latte (P235), roasted green tea Hojicha Latte (P210 for hot or iced), and the Matcha Latte Float (P290) with matcha soft serve ice cream on top which is something I need to go back and try!

there is also ice cream Matcha Spanish Latte, Matcha Salted Cream Latte, Tropical Matcha Fruit Soda, Y Matcha Lemonade for P210 each, and a Frozen Matcha Lemonade (P205). For something heavier, there is Matcha Banana Shake (P210), Matcha Protein with Milk (P350), Matcha Protein Shake with Banana (P350), Hojicha Protein with Milk (P350), Y Hojicha Protein Smoothie with Banana (P350).

Don’t worry, coffee addicts are welcome here too! Matcha Tokyo Offers American (P140), Café Latte (P190), Cappuccino (P190), Café Mocha (P200), Spanish Latte (P195), Salted Cream Latte (P195), Espresso Soda (P220), Y Frozen Coffee Latte (P210).

As for the rest of the sweets, there is matcha soft serve ice cream, strawberry matcha choux, matcha marble cake, matcha milk jam croffle, matcha french flan and dorayaki (P150).

Matcha Tokyo is located on the ground floor of the Mitusokshi Mall at 8th Ave. corner 36th St., Grand Central Park, North BGC, Taguig City. The mall, which is also home to the newer Mendokoro Ramenba branch and Fully Booked’s Kinokuniya bookstore, is open from 11am to 10pm. –Rappler.com
