How did your family come to this recipe? “Apparently, my great nana got it from a friend she worked with at the carnival, and then she passed it on to my nana and then to my mother.”
Is it a standard part of the MacMullens’ Thanksgiving? “Oh yeah. We have it every year. It’s so good I’m lost for words! Johnny, my boyfriend and I will eat three pieces before taking a breather. It’s sweet, decadent and buttery. It’s just perfect!”
Have you done it yourself? “My mom usually makes it, but this year I’m going to try to make one with her and make a gluten-free one. [version], such as using all the ingredients normally included, but use a gluten-free cake mix. What we usually do is do it the day of, but we do enough so that in the morning we can have a little with our coffee. We have it for dessert on Thanksgiving when it’s hot, which is awesome, but when do you have it the next day after it’s cold in the fridge? That is also amazing!”
Can you taste the alcohol in it? “You can’t really taste it, but I think the liquor gives it a specific flavor that balances the sweetness, which is maybe why it tastes so good.”

two. Drizzle the frosting over the cake while it’s hot, then allow it to cool so the frosting sets. “My mom pokes holes in the cake with a fork before I put the frosting on it, so it spreads all over the cake and not just on top.”
