“I woke up and I was so happy today. I decided to celebrate, so I came to this fancy bakery,” she explained.
“So I asked (the employee) what was unusual, I said ‘Bonjour, ma’am, I want a croissant, a coffee and a sugar.'”
Renan’s jaw dropped when she told him the price of the two items.
“Do you know what he told me? $US16 ($AU24),” she said.
Refusing to believe the price, he asked, “$16?”
“She said, ‘Yeah, $16,’” he recalled.
Renan replied: “But ma’am, what if I take the sugar away?”
“She said, ‘No, it’s still $16,’” he said.
‘It is very expensive’
“Mais c’est pas possible (but not possible). It is very expensive. I told her: ‘But, madam, I’m French, we had the idea… We invented the croissant, you can’t sell it to me. You know I’m dependent.’”
“She said, ‘Welcome to New York.'”
As he reluctantly handed over the $16, he received another charge.
“I take the $16, I give it to him, one by one… and you know what he tells me? ‘Extra tips,’” Renan said in disbelief.
He joked: “It was my budget for lunch, guys.”
Mocking the situation, Renan wrote in the caption: “François loves NY! Until he discovered the price of the croissant ”.
Her video has been viewed more than 5.4 million times, with many weighing in on her dilemma.
“You’re paying rent for the store,” one quipped.
Another said: “I love this! That is absolutely crazy! I hope it was totally worth it.”
One suggested: “SO MUCH?! That’s practically daylight robbery! What are they putting on that croissant, gold flour?
Another confirmed: “Yes, you are getting the authentic New York City experience.”
While one added: “$3 in Australia or a pack of 10 for $10.”
Many couldn’t help but laugh at his tirade.
“We invented the croissant. I’m dying,” a woman said, laughing.
While another added: “The tips killed me.”
