McLaren Vale’s #1 restaurant highlights local flavors with new summer menu • Glam Adelaide

On the heels of being recognized as the number 1 restaurant in McLaren Vale in the TripAdvisor Awards, The Currant Shed shows why it took the title.

The Currant Shed is a staple of the region, highlighting the importance of collaborating with the region’s amazing local businesses and they are proud to support the producers of McLaren Vale and Fleurieu.

The restaurant is dedicated to its spirit of providing an unforgettable dining experience without compromising its philosophy of supporting locals.

The Currant Shed works with Choice Mushrooms, which currently features in its gnocchi platter that includes crispy fried gnocchi, fried local mushrooms, mushroom puree and Parmesan cream, as well as Ellis Butchers, which offers a bespoke butcher service for Fleurieu restaurants, and whenever possible source from local farmers.

The Fleurieu Milk Company cannot be forgotten as they source 100% of their milk from the Myponga region, allowing them to control quality at the farm level. Fleurieu Free Range Eggs and McLaren Microgreens are also on display on the menu, rounding out some of SA’s most iconic offerings.

However, the list of local producers does not end there. The Currant Shed also caters to on-site gardens who provide their menus with as much homegrown, seasonal produce as possible and, when possible, create pantry items for their Shottesbrooke winery.

Pantry items are made from unique canned vegetables, fruits and other non-perishable items.

The restaurant grounds are home to a plantation of 30 Tahitian lime trees which, when in season, are a constant feature on The Currant Shed’s menu. Also, when the trees are full of fruit, the restaurant is happy to encourage its diners to take home lemons – sharing is a big aspect of what makes their little community so strong.

Their generous neighbors often leave their surplus homegrown produce at the restaurant for them to use, which helps eliminate waste and allows the venue the opportunity to give them something back.

The dishes themselves promise to be a true reflection of their fresh ingredients.

Currant Shed’s entrée is pork, peanuts, chili and bean sprouts. This pork belly dish is the only menu item that has been permanently served on their menu since it was introduced more than five years ago. According to the team, “if it were taken off the menu, there would be a riot.”

Berry Lemon Mousse Cake, with White Chocolate Juniper Ice Cream, served with fresh berries and juniper sugar, has recently been added to the seasonal menu. Created by the restaurant’s talented pastry chef, Tash, this dish has been incredibly popular with guests. With its striking purple features and enticing textures, it promises to taste as beautiful as it looks.

The Currant Shed not only caters for the big kids, but the little ones as well. The restaurant happily caters for children and offers a children’s tasting menu.

The kids’ menu features classic kids’ meals like fish and chips, spaghetti bolognese, and chicken tenders, and offers dessert options like a cookie sandwich with ice cream or a seasonal fruit ice block.

The Gooseberry Shed is usually closed on Wednesdays, but is open on Wednesdays throughout the festive period (December 21 and 28 and January 4).

Take a bite out of your own backyard and head over to The Currant Shed to find out why it gets rave reviews.
