Loulé will celebrate Christmas thinking about the energy crisis

Santa Claus will arrive in Loulé on Saturday, December 10

Loule going to celebrate Christmas with a wide range of events and activities but with “energy sustainability” always in mind due to the current energy crisis plaguing Europe.

The announcement was made by the Loulé City Council, which guarantees that The Christmas LED lights will remain on between December 10 and January 6 in Loulé, Quarteira and Almancil as well as in each local parish, but for a reduced time between 6:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.

“With this measure we are in line with what will happen in various cities around the world. We will try to balance the revitalization of our economy at a time as important as Christmas with the need to promote energy savings”, the City Council said in a press release.

Meanwhile, the Christmas entertainment will begin on Saturday, December 10 at 3:00 p.m. with the arrival of Santa Claus and the opening of ‘Aldeia dos Sonhos’, a Christmas village that features everything from an ice rink to a merry-go-round, a Christmas train, Santa’s house, an elf village, and various stalls selling Christmas sweets and treats.

The Christmas Village encompasses several areas near Cerca do Convento, as well as Dom Afonso III and São Francisco squares. It will be open on weekdays (except Monday) and Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Quarteira it will also have its own Christmas Square bringing a variety of festive fun to Praça do Mar and Centro Autárquico, including Christmas markets and live music and dance performances.

In almancil, the iconic Jardim das Comunidades (Garden of Communities) will become Jardim dos Sonhos (Garden of Dreams) and will also offer a wide range of Christmas-related activities.

Both Quarteira’s Christmas Square and Almancil’s Garden of Dreams will open on Sunday, December 11, with the arrival of Santa Claus scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in Quarteira and 3:30 p.m. in Almancil.

One of the “novelties” of the Christmas program this year in Loulé will be the return of Serra Fair in its original format in the old Carnival warehouse near the Santo António Convent.

The place is described as a “cozy space where about 100 exhibitors will sell handicrafts, food and drinks” that are traditional to the Algarve and its inland areas. There will also be live music. Admission is free and the doors will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

The Loulé municipal library and museum will also organize their own activities for children, from reading Christmas stories to workshops, while the local project Loulé Criativo will organize a series of workshops at Palácio Gama Lobo throughout December.

The festive program will end with a new year concert by the Portuguese band Expensive Soul in Quarteira, followed by the traditional opening of a 150-meter ‘Bolo-rei’ (a typical Portuguese Christmas cake) at Praça da República on January 6 at 5:00 p.m.

Loulé will also encourage people to buy locally offering buyers the chance to win vouchers or “dream trips”. Anyone who makes a purchase of €10 or more at one of the participating local businesses will be in with a chance to win.
