Jackson’s Dawn Foods partners with nonprofit to bring joy to foster children

JACKSON, Mich. — Jackson’s Dawn Foods is starting a partnership with the nonprofit For Goodness Cakes, its first corporate sponsor, to celebrate the birthdays of children in foster care.

“There are so many foster children. There are over 400,000 of them in the US at any given time, and most of them are temporary,” said co-founder Jaime Lehman.

Lehman started the idea with co-founder Jess Churchill in California after talking to one of his friends about celebrating a birthday.

“They said, ‘I don’t know. No one has celebrated my birthday before. They had grown up poor and it was easier not to recognize their birthday,” Lehman said.

So, she sought to fix that.

“Essentially, a foster child can move up to 10 times in a year just to be transported back and forth. There is no consistency in saying someone is going to remember their birthday, and it is very important that our organization work with other agencies that specifically deal with foster children, foster youth, domestic violence shelters, LGBTQIA+ shelters as well.” Lehman said.

Now, they’re getting help from Dawn Foods of Jackson.

“We are partnering internally and externally with our customers, our employees, team members to be a part of the sprinkler team and also to do a local chapter with baker friends where young children learn baking and bakery techniques and cultural bakes where they help educate people about cultural flavors, colors and styles of baked goods for different ethnicities,” said Dawn Foods Director of Corporate Giving Sarah Richmond.

You can help too, but you don’t have to be a master cake decorator to make a difference.

“It’s been a really incredible experience to see how much a little bit of effort from someone means to another person who may not have received that level of effort from someone before,” Lehman said.

“Become a part of the largest spray squad, either here in Jackson or at one of the local chapters in the United States,” Richmond said. “Visit our website for more information and to learn how you can sign up and be a part of the great team of sprinkles and donate cakes.”

They will be opening their Jackson chapter sometime over the summer and are still looking for a chapter leader.

Over the next three years, Dawn Foods will sponsor the opening of four new For Goodness Cakes chapters, as well as five existing ones in the United States.
