How to Travel Vegan in British Columbia

Traveling as a vegan has never been easier, but it’s important to know where to find plant-based food options on your trip. The movement toward a more sustainable, healthy, and cruelty-free lifestyle is gaining popularity as people ditch animal products for plant-based alternatives. British Columbia, known for its impressive mountain ranges, rainforests, and tranquil beaches, is an exciting destination in all four seasons. There are diverse communities that provide tempting and delicious dining experiences and plenty of fresh food options. Whether you’re vegan, trying Meatless Mondays, or just curious what all the fuss about plants is about, here are five restaurants I visited in British Columbia with vegan options.

Vancouver – Good Dogs Plant Food

On my first night in Vancouver I stumbled across Good Dogs Plant Foods, an all-vegan restaurant on Robson Street. The owner is charming, friendly and cares about animals and the modern restaurant is decorated with bold, colorful artwork and unique memorabilia. good dogs The mission is to serve healthy, fast and delicious food that is good for people and good for the planet. The dishes contain ingredients sourced from local farms and use multiple cooking techniques and textures to keep things interesting. With a great selection of plant-based hot dogs, I opted for the stadium dog filled with house sauerkraut, crispy onion, granulated dijon and house ketchup with fries and a house salad. In addition to many gourmet vegan hot dogs, they create delicious salads, bowls, and appetizers. They also serve craft cocktails and local beers and enjoy an ice cream float for dessert.

It is worth mentioning that several people told me to visit the plant-based restaurant called Meet. They have three locations: Gastown, Yaletown, and Main, and their menu items look delicious. Meet’s mission is to help people stop eating animals and encourage them to eat more plants. Meet is on my list for next time!

Granville Island – Public Market

Granville Island is the perfect day trip and magical destination within the city. Just hop on a Vancouver False Creek Ferry at one of nine dock locations and the adorable little boat will whisk you there. Granville Island is a lovely place to stroll, shop, listen to music and immerse yourself in the arts and culture center with a historic maritime heritage. There are fresh produce in every direction at the public market and it is a good opportunity to stock up on fruits and vegetables. Laurelle’s Fine Foods is a family-owned bakery, and while not a plant-based restaurant, it does offer a number of vegan-friendly options, such as a variety of fresh salads (kale, quinoa, yams, or Asian beans) and puff pastry rolls (Los Mexican flax rolls and tofu puff pastry rolls are vegan).

There are several vegan dessert and snack options like the pecan brownie, healthy muffins, and blueberry oatmeal bars. Grab a plant-based smoothie or fresh juice at Fraser Valley Juice & Salad and take it outside to enjoy near the water and watch the boats go by.

Clearwater – The Wild Flour Cafe Bakery

Although it is not a vegan restaurant, this delicious and intimate cafe has several healthy plant-based options and the owners are very friendly and will prepare sandwiches and wraps to your liking. The Wild Flour Bakery Café creates meals with fresh, quality ingredients and everything is made from scratch, right down to their own freshly ground ancient grain flowers used for baking. They also support the local community and organic food producers in the area. It was so good I went back again (It was a challenge finding vegan options in Clearwater so plan ahead) Menu selections include Roasted Carrot and Quinoa Wrap, Vegan Herb Roasted Potatoes, Smoked Bean and Rice Burrito, and they have a variety of vegan desserts and muffins, I had several to go and enjoyed them while hiking through Wells Gray Provincial Park looking for waterfalls.

Salmon Arm – Still Food Bistro

Still Food Bistro is the only fully vegan restaurant in Salmon Arm and a cute spot for brunch or weekend lunch. I devoured their breakfast Sammy (plant-based sausage, plant-based egg, cheese, mayonnaise, greens) and a side of potato salad with a tall oatmeal latte. They also have croissants (grab some to go!), falafel, salads, chicken burgers, tacos, curry bowls, and mushroom ramen. Save room for their delicious vegan desserts like brownies, cinnamon rolls, and carrot cake. His sincere and inspiring mission is to save millions of animals one bite and one sip at a time.

Just a few feet away on the same street is the famous Shuswap Pie Company and their apple pie is vegan and oh so delicious!

Kamloops – Yew Street Food Hall

The Yew Street Food Hall recently opened in Kamloops and is a fun dining experience for a night out. Locally owned restaurants come together under one roof to offer a variety of niche and artisan dining concepts to the North Shore community. There are ten vendors and one is completely vegan, Veggie Bomb. Serving up vegan street food such as tacos loaded with barbecue jack, spiced organic black beans, yam batter or veggie meatballs, you won’t go hungry here. Their food is bursting with flavor and I had the Atomic Bowl with organic brown basmati rice, bbq shredded jack, bomba sauce and veggies. I drank a mint ginger lemonade and took a vegan cupcake back to my hotel for dessert. Veggie Bomb is the only fully vegan restaurant in Kamloops, hopefully it does well and more places will follow in its plant-based footsteps.
