The 2022 football season is something to forget for the University of South Dakota and it ended Saturday with another loss.

USD were crushed at home by UNI on Seniors’ Day 58-14, but it wasn’t all gloom for the football programme.
After the loss to UNI, University of South Dakota athletic director David Herbster not only gave USD head coach Bob Nielson a vote of confidence in his future, but also shied away from an extension of contract.
“Our team experienced adversity and challenges beyond the toughest schedule in the country. Through injuries and other adjustments that put us at a disadvantage all year. Was this the season we expected? Absolutely not, and I think Bob (Nielson) would.” be the first to tell you that this is not what we want Coyote football to be. What Bob has done extremely well is put together an incredible group of young people who represent themselves, their families, their communities, and this University extremely well. I have always believed that there is more to training than what you see on a scoreboard.”
He went on to discuss the future of the program with coach Bob Nielson at the helm.
“We all believe in Bob and his ability to lead our team. That’s me, our president, this department and this university. He has won two national championships in his career and we have three playoff appearances in the last 35 years here at USD and Bob is responsible for two of them. With our support, we know we can achieve our goals of winning championships. With that being said, Bob will continue to be the head coach of the University of South Dakota for the foreseeable future and we will extend his contract. “
Since being at USD, Nielson has taken the program in a different direction than where it was when he arrived and that has included two playoff appearances.
Aside from this season, USD has found new hope within its soccer program and it will be interesting to see where it progresses.
