Now that we have some test dummy data on our spreadsheet we can go ahead and reformat the column widths. You can add more data if you would like or even use an already existing spreadsheet. The choice is completely up to you; however the steps to reformat the column widths are all the same as you will soon see. The next step is to highlight the columns that you want to reformat. To reformat the columns we are using in our example, using the month names, you need to click on the column header labeled ”A”. Now hold down the ”shift” key and click the column header labeled ”L”. In other words you are clicking the first column and the last column. If you chose to use your own spreadsheet, your columns that you use may be different. You could also click on column header ”A” and holding down the left mouse button, drag the cursor over top of the final column, in this case ”L”, and let go of the mouse button. Either way is fine.
Back during the infancy of this software, most people would use it for just two reasons: to store data (especially customer database) and as a glorified calculator. Perhaps because those are a spreadsheets intended or more practical uses or that people are not really that trained to use its features to the fullest. You would even be surprised that up to now there are office employees who, when they are prompted to make some calculations, they would open their spreadsheet software and do the calculations there. However, as weird as that may sound, it is one of the ways that a spreadsheet can help speed things up in the office. Especially if the employee has been working on spreadsheets for a long time that making fast calculations using the cells has become second nature to him. But there are other good uses for this application.
Microsoft Excel, and other spreadsheet programs, are becoming more and more popular to create pictures. These programs have become more popular primarily due to their being on just about every computer out there. They are readily available, and fairly cheap, all things considering. They also don‘t require much computer knowledge to operate, and even less artistic skill to use. So how exactly are people using this program to create a masterpiece? Simple; it‘s all about choosing the right colors and filling in the boxes. Just print out a color copy of what you want to make, draw a grid on the paper, and fill in the corresponding spreadsheet box with the appropriate color. It‘s kind of like a paint-by-number. Most people aren‘t creating new works, they are re-creating more famous ones.
What‘s the difference? As with the open-source website editors, it gets a little confusing. Both LibreOffice and NeoOffice run on the Mac and both are open-source. The interface of both look almost identical at first glance, and they both share largely the same features. So why the redundancy and which should you choose? Well, while LibreOffice runs on both Mac and Windows, NeoOffice is Mac only. It is a special branch or fork of OpenOffice that was developed to quash some of the bugs in the Mac version of OpenOffice. So I would say, if you‘re going to choose one, choose NeoOffice.
Experienced Excel users will appreciate that textboxes default to having a border and white background. That‘s because they are often used to add comments or guidance to a user and so have to stand out. Otherwise a user would be foolish not to type words directly into the spreadsheet‘s cells. As equations can only be created in textboxes, the default settings are somewhat different; there is no border and no fill.
You will find that there are dozens of different tutorials available online, ranging from books and courses that you can pay for to tutorials and video lessons that can be downloaded for free. Each of these courses is broken down into sections that will address each of the different sections of formula so that you can learn them in groups. This tends to make it much easier to fully grasp the necessary formula for each section before moving on to the next segment.
When presenting your business plan to an angel investor you must understand that they will be very interested in your spreadsheets and proformas, but you must also realize that it is typically an entrepreneurial optimistic approach, which causes problems with proformas. Therefore, you should have dueling spreadsheets; that is to say the spreadsheets, which take your best guess and double the time, double the expenses to compete with your optimistic approach. You should be able to present both of these to your Angel Investor; who chances are is a retired business person with a little bit of financial savvy.
