I’ve heard there are two types of coffee drinkers: some people drink coffee to wake up, and some people wake up to drink coffee. If this is true, I certainly fit into the latter category!
Related: When I first heard about a cute cafe called Hens & Honey that offers seasonal coffee flights, I knew I’d end up checking it out for myself.
Hens & Honey is a specialty coffee shop in Swedesboro. Being from the Jersey shore area, I don’t go to the southwestern corner of the state very often. I combined my trip with an errand (picking 50 pounds of frozen blueberries—a story for another day!), a coveted flight with coffee, and some small-town shopping before heading home.
If, like me, you’re not familiar with Swedesboro, your GPS may take you to Hens & Honey Boutique instead of the coffee shop. But do not worry. The cafe is just a mile drive down the road. And while you’re there, the boutique is a great place to browse and shop for vintage-inspired clothing and accessories. Definitely worth a visit!
Chicken and honey shop
Once I arrived at my initial destination, I was immediately taken with the cute and quirky decor of the Hens & Honey Shoppe. With cardboard cutouts of pop culture idols, a floor-to-ceiling floral mural covering one wall, and more special touches to set the mood, I realized this place is an Instagrammer’s paradise.
Hens & Honey also carries a variety of seasonal décor items, natural soaps, candles, and body products made by the store’s owner, Valarie. Surprisingly, the soybean oil and oils extracted from walnut trees used in these products are grown on her family’s farm. And on that note, the store includes an olive oil tasting bar.
Caffeine for days
The coffee flights take time to make – each one is made to order. With that in mind, they are available on a first-come, first-served basis, as they sell out on the weekends. And the in-flight flavors change seasonally. I chose the fall coffee flight. Not only was it delicious, but it was a work of art!
The coffees are presented on a wooden board and each one is labeled. The names of the coffees are as cute as the store itself. My flight included mini harvest moon mugs, jack-o-lantern, pecan rail, and flannel jacket. Each coffee is topped with oodles of whipped cream and a delicious assortment of sprinkles and sprinkles.
The menu on the board changes often. Coffee flights can also be made from a mix and match flavor chart. It is said that ready-to-use winter and holiday drinks will soon be available. For a small bite or something more substantial, Hens & Honey also offers baked goods, bagels, and soups.
Shopping on the main street
After my coffee experience, I was fully caffeinated and ready to do some shopping. I drove quickly to Mullica Hill, which has a large main street lined with shops. In fact, it’s everything I love about a small-town shopping trip, all in one place.
I searched for specialty kitchen stores, a cheese shop, and a vintage-inspired home decor place. Then I moved into antiques, clothing boutiques, and a nifty flower shop. But the real surprise on the block was Brew x Bread, a combined coffee shop, bakery, wine, and bar.
If you’re looking to shop for unique gifts in a festive setting while supporting small businesses, this is a perfect place to do some holiday shopping.
Best Sandwich in South Jersey
Until now, my day included caffeine, sugar, and shopping. At this point, it was time for lunch. My next task: Grab a bite to eat at the place voted Best Sandwich by South Jersey Magazine: David & Sons 322 Butcher and Barbecue.
David & Sons 322 Butcher Shop & BBQ has locations in both Mullica Hill and Swedesboro. That day’s tour took me to the Mullica Hill location. Walking in I was met with the enticing smells of smoked meat and barbecue, but I ordered the sandwich I came for: the crispy shrimp po’ boy!
This locally famous sandwich is served on a 12-inch roll. It’s packed with fried shrimp, spicy slaw, caramelized tomatoes and onions. Hit the spot. I know I’ll be back to try some BBQ options in the near future.
And donuts too!
David & Sons also sells cookies, huge cinnamon buns, and donuts, which are offered in a number of offbeat varieties. With flavors including s’mores, Oreo, peanut butter cup, pumpkin cheesecake, banana brûlée, and more, I had some tough decisions to make.
I chose the seasonal pumpkin cheesecake donut. I took my gift home to enjoy after the long journey. I look forward to my next visit to this area!
