DODGE CITY – Betty Louise Nilhas, age 87, died on Friday, November 18, 2022 at her home in Dodge City, Kansas. She was born on May 7, 1935 in Jetmore, Kansas, the daughter of Morris and Elemerta (Yeager) Reed. She grew up in Jetmore and graduated from high school in 1953. Betty met Ray Nilhas and they were married on January 21, 1954. They were lucky enough to be married for 62 years. Betty and Ray loved to play cards and were in a card club for several years. Betty was involved with the Girl Scouts as a troop leader from 1961 to 1967. Betty worked at the Craft Hut, Sewing Center, and ultimately finished her working career as a secretary for Christ Church with nearly 40 years of service. She enjoyed crocheting, counting cross stitch and Christmas decorations. She was always making ornaments, hand towels, scarves and other gifts for her daughters and grandchildren. Betty was also a great baker and she loved to make them for her grandchildren on any occasion, but she loved making cakes with her good friend, Rae Tweedy. Betty enjoyed attending her weekly ladies’ Bible study and helping out with whatever she could at her church. She was a Sunday school teacher for many years. Betty is survived by her two daughters, Beverly Burney and her husband Philip, Brenda Pogue and her partner, Greg Martinez; five grandchildren, Melissa Lindenman and her husband Shawn, Rachel Kitch and her husband Brian, Daniel Pogue, Amanda Burney Webb and her husband Orie Webb, and Danna Pogue and her partner Evan McKinley; 11 great-grandchildren, Jacob and Leah Lindenman, Jordan and Jacquelyn Kitch, Autumn, Ethan and Chase Pogue, Kade Hammas and Arylce Jo Webb, and Summer and Brody Weil; a sister, Alice Price; a brother, Walter Reed and wife Pat; sister-in-law, Judy Reed and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her grandson, Jason Lee Burney, her brother, Joe Reed, brother-in-law, Charlie Price, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Ruth Ann Nilhas, her brother-in-law. -law and sister-in-law, Merle and Audrey Nilhas, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Mae Rassmussen, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Hollis and Jesse Hunt. Her funeral will be Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at 10:00 am at Christ Church, Dodge City. Burial will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Ft. Dodge with Gary Bennett officiating. There will be no public wake, cremation has taken place. Friends and family may sign the registry book at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City on Tuesday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
