Kolkata has just witnessed the recently launched Shantnu & Nikhil’s bold Cricket Collection, a more avant-garde take on traditional cricket-inspired fashion clothing in collaboration with the reigning captain of the women’s cricket team, Harmapreet Kaur, unveiled at the Blenders Pride Glassware Fashion Tour. The icing on the cake was the glamorous presence of the acting couple Rajkummar Rao and Patralekha Paul as the leads.
Known for their laid-back fashion vibes, the adorable couple completed a year of wedded bliss on November 15, and we couldn’t help but ask them about the secrets to a successful marriage, their romance, and some helpful tips for everyone. -to be girlfriends and boyfriends.
You have just completed one year of marriage. How exciting has the journey been?
Rajkummar Rao: It’s been fantastic and nothing has really changed because we’ve known each other for over 11 or 12 years now. But yeah, I feel more complete, now.
Patralekha: We feel very comfortable with each other and that’s why we got married.
Patralekha: We have just celebrated our 1st anniversary at Oberoi Sukhvilas in Chandigarh (where they got married) and completely relaxed. In fact, during our wedding as well, Raj had a lot of fun. He was the happiest boyfriend and his energy was so contagious.
Is there anything new (good, bad or ugly) that you have discovered about each other after the marriage?
Patralekha: If there was something bad and ugly, we wouldn’t have gotten married in the first place.
Rajkummar: And now it’s too late, since I said that 11 years is a long time.
Patralekha: Raj is as dedicated as a human being, not only to his craft but also to his relationships: the things he owns, like his car or his love for his dog. The respect of him for all of him is what makes me fall in love with him.
Something that keeps a marriage going?
Rajkummar and Patralekha: Trust, friendship and respect in addition to love, which is a constant.
How different is marriage from living together or dating?
Rajkummar: When we started living in the last 6 years before marriage, it was as good as being married. When we went out, we used to make plans to go to the movies or dinner and we wanted to see each other more often, which also had its charm.
Patralekha: After marriage, I feel more comfortable in this space: marriage has made our relationship more grounded and stable. Both Raj and I are house birds and love to relax on our beautiful terrace which now doubles as our date zone.
Tell us, what were your first impressions of each other?
Rajkummar: She wasn’t pointing at me when she first saw me because she had seen LSD where I played a really creepy guy and she thought that’s what I’m like in real life.
Patralekha: In those days, natural acting was barely coming of age and I walked out of the movie theater with the character of Raj in my head, not knowing that I would marry this guy later (laughs).
Rajkummar: I saw her in an ad about a month or two before we met, and I liked her.
What do you like about each other?
Rajkummar: She is a complete package of everything: a true friend, a partner, a wife, a fashion and beauty expert, who is also equally loved by our close group of friends. I think Patra is special because she is very real and never politically correct.
Patralekha: I adore his respect for everyone and his caring nature.
How do you resolve your differences?
Patralekha: We don’t have too many fights, but when we do have our differences, we start to laugh about it after a while.
Rajkummar: Our arguments never last more than a couple of hours as we both start to miss each other.
What do you like to do together?
Rajkummar: Watch movies together and travel.
Patralekha: Raj is an avid observer and my go-to for good content. We love watching all kinds of content, be it non-fiction or fiction, and are currently enjoying dramas a lot. We just finished watching season 5 of The crown.
Your fashion choices?
Rajkummar: It is Partarlekha who buys for me and it is her approval that matters most to me. Anything she puts on I consult her and I even send her photos if I’m not there.
Patralekha: I think he’s effortlessly cool in real life and in his profession and his fashion choices channel that vibe as well. I was born and raised in Shillong, the capital of the Orient. I grew up seeing elegantly dressed men and women. I always like to keep things very basic and subtle. I love to wear white shirts or t-shirts and jeans and for weddings I love sarees.
Your next projects?
Patralekha: Gulkanda Tales by Raj and DK, another web series for Disney+Hotstar and Luv Ranjan’s film for OTT.
Rajkummar: Anubhav Sinha’s Bheed, Raj and DK’s web series Guns and Gulab and a film called Mr & Mrs Mahi opposite Jahnvi Kapoor.
Your advice for future brides and grooms?
Rajkummar: During your wedding, have the most of fun.
Patralekha: Yes, because ultimately, only you are the one who will remember your wedding day most vividly.
