Autumn Burrito with Latte and Chorizo from Second Best Coffee

Although its name will tell you otherwise, don’t be fooled by Second Best Coffee’s humbleness. Based in Waldo, the shop’s coffee menu is delicious and the food is prepared in-house.

The Autumn Latte is the ultimate fall drink, but great for the upcoming holidays as it tastes like the runny form of a gingerbread house. This is a lovely cold weather brew for those looking to shake things up on their PSL as it has minimal spice but not without deliciousness. The other seasonal drink offering is the decadent Sparklehorse, a frothy chai infused with star anise, apricot, and dried figs.

While Second Best’s buns are a cafeteria classic and almost always sell out with their unique flavors, the burritos are not to be overlooked. The Chorizo Burrito, for example, is stuffed with aerated eggs, chorizo, potatoes, and melted cheese wrapped in a crispy tortilla. If you’re enjoying it at home, the burrito is wrapped in parchment and tied with string to preserve heat and served with a bottle of Cholula.

Second Best Coffee is located at 328 W 85th St., Kansas City, MO 64114. They are open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Hook Em’ Up Sandwich in M&M Bakery and Delicatessen

M&M Bakery and Delicatessen is a small joint that serves up some of Kansas City’s best baked goods and stacked sandwiches through one window. Located at the corner of 31st and Woodland Ave., the bakery offers traditional American desserts such as freshly baked doughnuts, cookies and cheesecake. Apple fritters, chocolate-covered long johns, and deep-fried cinnamon rolls (yes, you read that right) are just a few examples of the fluffy delights baked up daily. Grab an assortment to go with your breakfast sandwich.

As for sandwiches, the Hook ‘Em Up is a must. The sandwich is layered with peppercorn beef, turkey, and ham and topped with the toppings: lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, miracle whip, mustard, hot cheese, and American cheese. The onion roll is the equivalent of “icing on the cake”. All sandwiches are served with a bag of chips.

M&M Bakery and Delicatessen is located at 1721 E 31st St., Kansas City, MO 64109.

Paros Estiatorio Greek food and cocktails

If you can’t look at another Thanksgiving plate full of your usual brown suspects, treat yourself to some fresh Mediterranean fare at Paros Estiatorio. The upscale restaurant is adjacent to Rye at Mission Farms and serves Greek food with a modern twist. The menu offers feta, lamb, and puff pastry, but the seafood options shine with items like Chilean sea bass and whole lobster.

Paros excels at letting the ingredients shine on their own. For example, the baked pita bread and feta appetizer is drizzled with pure extra virgin olive oil and sprinkled with fresh herbs. You also can’t go wrong with any of the meaty options. The lamb shank entree served on a bed of mashed potatoes and topped with a hearty demi-glace might just be the Greek-style Thanksgiving dish you’ve been missing all along.

The cocktail menu is exceptional, filled with sparkling spirits and sophisticated mixes. You can guarantee your cocktail will be dressed with a rustic rosemary garnish or edible flowers too pretty to eat. The Paros Martini is a noteworthy cocktail as it is a smooth mix of grapefruit liqueur, basil and cucumber. The result is an extremely refreshing libation, but not too sweet.

Paros Estiatorio is located at 10561 Mission Rd., Leawood, KS 66206.
